SHABU WORTH P730-M SEIZED

MANILA, Aug. 25  -- About 365 kilos of shabu with a street value of P730 million have been seized by a military and
police team in Sariaya, Quezon.

The drug haul was the second biggest since April, officials
said. Police arrested six foreigners, all with Chinese-sounding
names.

Chief Supt. Lucas Managuelod, Philippine National Police (PNP)
Region 4 director, said the drugs originated from mainland China
and shipped through Hongkong.

The plastic bags of shabu were about to be loaded into a L300
van in Barangay Bignay II, a coastal village in Sariaya town, when the law enforcers made the bust. The village was a known unloading area of smuggled goods, police said.

Managuelod identified only four of the suspects: Reymond Tan,
driver of the van; Shilou Chuia of Fujian, China, with local
address in Guiguinto, Bulacan; Cheung Kwok Wai and Kan Shunn Min, both Hongkong nationals.

The identities of the two other foreigners have not been
established.  Police said Cheung and Kan are known members of the Hongkong Triad, a Chinese syndicate with a worldwide distribution network for prohibited drugs.

Managuelod said the seizure was a result of police
intelligence operation since March last year.

The team also confiscated a brand-new green Nissan Sentra and personal belongings in the name of Larrie Perez Lim of San Juan, Balagtas, Bulacan.

According to Managuelod, the group also brings in other
contraband, but its main line was illegal drugs.

Managuelod said the operation was participated in by elements
of the Quezon police under Sr. Supt. Charlemagne Alejandrino,
Military Intelligence Group 4 under Maj. Carlomagno Tabo, Fourth
Light Armored Battalion under Lt. Col. Quirico Alonzo and the First Infantry Battalion headed by Col. Efren Orbon.

Early this year, military agents in Quezon province found out
that communist rebels act as couriers for drug syndicates operating in Southern Tagalog.

Last April 5, the PNP confiscated 229 kilos of shabu worth
P458 from Oliver Ang, a Chinese national.

In June, Cagayan police agents recovered 175 kilos of shabu
worth P350 million from three fishermen, who were working for the syndicate as couriers. (SNS)
