LAKAS DENIES EAVESDROPPING
ON ERAP

MAANILA, Aug. 25 -- A stalwart of Lakas-NUCD has
dismissed reports that the opposition has been eavesdropping on President Joseph Estrada through the bugging devices installed in his office.

Maj. Thomas Dumpit Jr. said the opposition has placed
listening devices in the Office of the President whose recordings allegedly end up in the Lakas-NUCD headquarters.

"We do not have an ear or an eye in Malacañang to know what is going on in the Estrada administration. Everyone knows the ills of the country -- cronyism, graft and corruption and misplaced economic programs," Isabela Rep. Heherzon Alvarez said.

Alvarez also asked President Estrada to conduct a loyalty
check among Palace officials to remedy his ailing presidency.
Reports said Intelligence Services of the Armed Forces of the
Philippines (ISAFP) chief Maj. Gen. Jose Calimlim has maintained
his loyalty to former President Fidel V. Ramos.

At the same time, he pointed out that the support given by
government officials to the Moro rebels in Mindanao is a cause for alarm.

If reports were true, he said, then the President faces a big
challenge. "If the President, as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, cannot command loyalty from the military or even the police force, then there is a serious problem," he added.

He explained that Lakas has been trying to help the Estrada
government meet the challenges.

"Lakas will remain true to its program of critical collaboration. It will remain as a constructive fiscalizer rather than as saboteur," he added. (SNS)
