Lt. Rolando Punzalan, chief information officer of the The ship, owned by William Gothong and Aboitiz Shipping Co., left Pier 14 at North Harbor, Manila, at 4 p.m. Punzalan said the boat had sailed about 15 miles when the fire broke out, causing panic among its passengers. It was not immediately known what caused the fire, but witnesses said smoke first came out from an air-conditioning unit on the yellow section of deck 6. Crewmen put out the blaze 15 minutes later as smoke began to envelope the vessel, witnesses told the coast guard. Management reported no injuries but witnesses claimed some passengers were hurt during the pandemonium. Commodore Domingo Estera, PCG district 1 chief, said they
would investigate the incident. He said the ship owner reported the incident 12 hours after the fire. (SNS) REQUEST FOR A COMPLIMENTARY COPY Refresh
