TAMPA -- Philfest is the largest outdoor Philippine festival held three days in April in Florida. It is the most distinctive and eagerly awaited event in the Tampa Bay Area.

For over six years now, thousands of migrant Filipinos, Filipino-Americans, and a diverse attendance from various nationalities all over the country flock to the Tampa Bay area to an event they call "home" -- Philfest, the signature event of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. (PCFI).

On April 5, 6 and 7 this year, PCFI will continue to make Filipinos, their friends and families feel at home once again, as it showcases the Philippines' exotic heritage in more innovate ways at the new $3-million Philippine Cultural Enrichment Center.

The three-day celebration, which is fashioned after the barrio fiesta in the Philippines, will showcase food, songs and dances, exhibits of arts and handicrafts, and shows featuring authentic Philippine costumes from various regions.

This year, cultural exhibits will be held at the Bayanihan Center for the first time. This will allow attendees to view the exhibits and to see the brand new Arts Center.

Paintings by renowned Filipino artists such as Rafael Cusi, Jun Martinez and Ricky Montilla from the Philippines will also be making their debut.

Rondalla, brass musical instruments granted by the Arts Council of Hillsborough County, will also be on exhibit, along with a collection of Philippine crafts. Writer-publisher Marlene Aguilar will be present to sign her new book.

Attendees will also witness for the first time the swearing-in of about 400 new American citizens by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Plans to hold all INS future citizenship events at the center are also being considered.
The witnesses will include the newly appointed Philippine Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Albert del Rosario, together with Gretchen de Venecia del Rosario, consul general Jocelyn Batoon Garcia, labor attache Helen Custodio and consular officer Filomena Manaois who will be at the festival to meet with the community. The Philippine embassy will also have a booth for consular services.

"This Philfest will once again unite Filipinos, their families and friends from all over the country, especially those in Florida,'' says Claire Ick, who takes charge of marketing, budget and operations, while husband Bill serves as chair.
First-time Filipino performers from Ohio, Houston and many parts of Florida are also expected to add more color to the festival.

So far, PCFI has also been holding various events to drum up publicity leading to the big event. These include a "Tawag ng Tanghalan,"a singing contest popularized in Manila; "Revolution," a modern talent competition at the Sinagtala; and a performance by Sari-Sari Band at the Barangay Pavilion.

Since its inception in 1996, the non-profit organization has kept attendees educated and entertained with its exposition of Filipino arts and culture.
"With Phifest, we have never been so happy to see Filipinos have a great time being a Filipino," says Claire.

PCFI, through Philfest, has certainly given the fast-growing ethnic minority group a venue to reconnect as well as introduce to a new breed of young Filipino-Americans the value of a Filipino community's collective effort--what Filipinos call Bayanihan, in a Philippine festival that is getting bigger and better.

"The PCFI has come a long way, thanks to its volunteers and the assistance of the Filipino-American community, its friends and supporters," says Bill.
This year's event is chaired by Rudy Bautista and vice-chaired by board members Lucy Bautista and Lari Cummings.

"Proceeds of the three-day affair this year will go to the Bayanihan Cultural and Artistic Program," says Claire.

The annual Philippine Festival is being held on April 5, from 4 p.m.-11 p.m., April 6, from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and April 7, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at Nine Eagles Road, off Race Track Road, Tampa, Florida; ¾ mile north of Tampa Bay downs and one mile north of Oldsmar Flea Market/Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa. For information, call 813 925 1232 or 813 909 4715.
