3 foreigners missing in boat trip |

MANILA, Dec. 21 -- Two Dutch nationals, a Polish national and their two Filipino guides have gone missing after a boat trip in the Visayas, police said. Marcel and Yajoo Wilderom of The Netherlands and Nicklaus Bisschop of Poland hired Alejandro Maningo and Leoncio Capistrano, on |
Dec. 18 for a motorboat ride from the island of Siquijor to Apo, a dive resort, said Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Sr. Supt. Ernesto Bataoil. Siquijor officials reported the five missing on Dec. 19 after they failed to arrive at Apo island, Bataoil said. |
Authorities are investigating but officials fear the boat may have capsized in bad weather. (MNS) |

MANILA, Dec. 19 -- Members of a prominent Filipino-Chinese family and their household staff have been massacred at their home in Zamboanga City. Juliet Tan, her children Federic, Cristopher and Cathy; her maids Lolita and Lorita; and houseboy Oliver were found dead, sprawled in different parts of their house in Barangay San Roque by family driver Nelson Damian when he reported for work on Dec. 19. Tan, a widow, produces wine and owns a calamansi farm. |
Initial investigation by police said the Tans and their staff died from hard blows to their heads. Juliet was found by the main door, Cristopher on the stairs, Federic and Oliver were found near the kitchen, Cathy was in the comfort room and the maids were inside the kitchen. Another houseboy identified only as Rudy from Dumaguete has been tagged as the main suspect, helped by at least four others in committing the multiple murders, police said. |
Cristopher's Honda Dream was found by members of the anti-carnapping unit at the local wharf in Pantalan, leading investigators to suspect that Rudy might have fled to his home province. Police are looking into a possible motive as an inspection of the Tans' house showed no signs of robbery. (MNS) |

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec. 16 -- Communist guerrillas have killed four people and abducted 18 others in a raid in Agusan, the military said. Several dozen New People's Army (NPA) gunmen killed four residents, ransacked houses and set the structures on fire before leaving the village of Binicalan with 22 hostages and several animals in tow, said Maj. Johnny Macanas, spokesman for an army division in the area. Four of the 18 hostages escaped and reported the attack to the authorities, he added. |
The remote hamlet is located near San Luis town on the Agusan river basin. "There is an ongoing operation. Troops are tracking down the rebels and their captives," Macanas said. He said the rebels murdered four brothers, one of them belonging to a pro-government militia force. Many of those abducted were former NPA rebels who have since surrendered, he added. |
"The attack could be a retaliation by the NPA for the surrender of their former comrades," Macanas said. Southern Command chief Lt. Gen. Narciso Abaya has ordered troops to pursue the rebels and rescue the hostages. "We got the report and the military is doing everything to recover safely all the hostages. Troops have been tracking down the terrorists," Abaya said. (MNS) |

Five dead in shootout |

MANILA, Dec. 22 -- Five people from two prominent political clans in Southern Philippines have been killed in an early morning shootout and an ambush on Dec. 22, police said. In an exchange of gunfire at a disco, Hoffer Ampatuan, a son of the governor of Maguindanao province, was killed with a woman and an engineer identified with another political family, police said. |
It was not clear what caused the firefight, but Sultan Kudarat police chief Sangacala Dampac said Ampatuan's wife had had a heated argument with the woman who was killed. The father and brother of the slain engineer, identified as Jerry Andalin, were later ambushed by gunmen believed to be followers of the Ampatuan clan, raising the death toll to five. |
Dampac said police have been ordered on high alert around the city, amid reports that followers of the large Ampatuan clan were planning further attacks against the Andalins. Vendetta killings are common in the strife-torn Southern Philippines, where political families command armed followers and bodyguards. (MNS) |
