Central Florida Marks 105th Year of Philippine Independence

ORLANDO – This year’s Philippine Independence Day Celebration at Lake Eola Park in Orlando attracted a heavy turnout of visitors and participants.

“It has been a very successful celebration,” Overall Chairman Danny Acampado told the huge crowd in his closing remarks. “I am very thankful to the numerous Fil-Am organizations that made this event a big success.”

Event organizers dubbed the May 31 celebration, Pistahan Sa Eola Park.

Considered as the largest crowd-drawer in Central Florida, the event was organized by the Philippine Nurses Association and the Council for Filipino American Organizations of Central Florida.

The festival started at 10:30 in the morning with a grand parade.

The whole day festivities featured a Filipino cultural show at the Lake Eola Amphitheater, numerous booths showcasing Filipino products and handicrafts and the sale of native Philippine cuisine.

Culminating the event was the staging of Santacruzan 2003. Winners of the Mutya ng Kalayaan 2003 were among the 32 Santacruzan queens and princesses. This year’s Reyna Elena was portrayed by 2003 Mutya ng Kalayaan winner Amy Jean Shamieh. Jonathan Dianda portrayed the role of Prince Constantine.

Dr. Pedro Gonzales was picked as this year’s Hermano Grand Marshall. Mrs. Norma Camoes was selected as the Hermana Mayor.

In another development, the Gala and Coronation Night of this year’s Mutya ng Kalayaan has been set on June 7 at 7:00 in the evening at the Wyndham Orlando Resort Convention Center.

Mutya ng Kalayaan 2003 winner Amy Jean Shamieh will also receive two round trip tickets to the Philippines as part of her winnings.

Other winners in the Mutya Search include: Jayne Wingie Alagano, Mutya ng Luzon; Noreen Ali, Mutya ng Visayas; and Kathryn Megan-Albino, Mutya ng Mindanao.

Beng Reyes chaired this year’s Mutya Search while Nora Dator was designated chairperson of the Coronation and Gala night.

The Council for Filipino-American Organizations of Central Florida is an umbrella of more than one dozen Filipino-American groups and organizations in Orlando and neighboring localities.
